SAN ANTONIO (April 1, 2017) – Morgan Klimchuk tallied a pair of goals to help the Stockton Heat (31-25-4-2) to a 5-3 victory on Saturday and a weekend sweep over the San Antonio Rampage (25-37-5-2) at the AT&T Center.
Stockton opened the scoring on their first shot of the game when Mikkel Aagaard beat Rampage goalie Joe Cannata with a wrister over the shoulder at 6:21 for a 1-0 lead. Colin Smith evened the game for the Rampage with a power-play goal at 7:34, but the Heat closed the first period with back-to-back goals from Klimchuk at 16:29 and Andrew Mangiapane at 19:59 on the power play to take a 3-1 lead to the first intermission.
San Antonio responded with two quick goals in the second to tie the game at three. Smith netted his second of the game redirecting a shot from the corner through Heat goalie Jon Gillies at 5:52 to make it 3-2. Gus Young then pounced on a loose puck at the top of the circle and slapped it past Gillies at 8:39 to even the game. But the Heat countered with two goals in 25 seconds from Klimchuk and Ryan Lomberg at 11:31 and 11:56, respectively, restoring their two goal lead after 40 minutes.
The third period went scoreless as the Rampage failed to tie the game before the end of regulation.
