Dougie Hamilton will not play for the New Jersey Devils at the Boston Bruins on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; SNP, NESN, MSG+, ESPN+, NHL LIVE) because of a jaw injury.
The defenseman was taken to a hospital after getting hit with a deflected puck 7:05 into the first period of a 4-3 overtime win at the Washington Capitals on Sunday.
“He’s back in New Jersey to get evaluated a little more, so he won’t be available tonight,” Devils assistant Alain Nasreddine said Tuesday.
Nasreddine has assumed coaching duties since coach Lindy Ruff entered NHL COVID-19 protcol Dec. 31.
New Jersey (13-15-5), which has won three straight games, is tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets for sixth in the eight-team Metropolitan Division.
Hamilton, who agreed to a seven-year, $63 million contract ($9 million average annual value) with the Devils on July 29, has scored 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) and is averaging 21:25 of ice time in 30 games.
Defenseman Christian Jaros will replace Hamilton in the lineup for New Jersey.
Hamilton and center Nico Hischier are tied for third in scoring for the Devils, behind forwards Jesper Bratt (29 points; nine goals, 20 assists) and Andreas Johnsson (21 points; nine goals, 12 assists).
Forward Tomas Tatar was removed from COVID-19 protocol, participated in New Jersey’s morning skate Tuesday and will be in the lineup against Boston.
