In New York, never mind about the offense for a minute.
On Sunday, Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves for the Ranges second straight shutout.
They blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night, 6-0, before posting a 7-0 whitewash of the Nashville Predators on Sunday.
It was Halak’s first shutout of the season, and first since he blanked the Rangers two years ago.
“I’m pretty sure guys have something to prove over here that we have a good team and want more,” Halak said.
Halak also kicked in an assist in the win.
Now to the offense. The Ranges have scored 15 straight goals going back to the third period of their game with the Penguins on Thursday night.
On Sunday, they scored six goals in the first period, on six straight shots.
Filip Chytil opened the scoring when he split the Nashville defense and stuffed home the puck for a 10 lead.
“It’s good for the confidence that we showed we can play for 60 minutes every shift, 100 percent,” Chytil said. “We have to keep it going for the next games.”
The first five goals of the first period were scored by the 10 minute mark of the stanza.
Mika Zibanejad scored off the power play from the left post for a 20 lead, and the rout was on.
“We had a horrible start to the game, left our goalies out to dry and just never gave ourselves a chance,” Nashville defenseman Tyson Barrie said. “Good learning experience. You can’t come out and lay an egg like that early and expect to be in games.”
Tyler Motte scored from the right side circle for a 3-0 advantage to the Rangers.
K’Andre Miller scored his first of two in the frame for a 4-0 lead.
Miller also had two assist in the period for four points, a new mark for a Rangers defenseman.
“I mean, quite literally it just felt like everything I touched was somehow finding the back of the net at the end of the play,” Miller said. “I wish every game was like that.”
Artemi Panarin made it 5-0 on the next shot, this from the left circle.
“The first thing is to realize it’s not going to be six or seven every night but having that said, it’s just the confidence of knowing that we can score,” Zibanejad said. “I don’t think, especially the last two games, we’ve been cheating for offense or abandoning the [defensive] zone just to play offense. I think we’ve been doing it the right way. We have the confidence. We have the feeling in here that we know that we can score.”
Miller then connected from the right point for a 60 lead headed to the middle frame.
In the eighth minute of the second, Chris Kreider scored off a rebound form the left post for the 7-0 final.
“We have success when we’re playing simple and playing direct, getting pucks in behind their defensemen and just making it hard on the other team,” Miller said. “When we use our speed and use our skill, I mean those are two things that are pretty hard to stop on this team.”
The Predators dropped to 34-26-8.
Kevin Lankinen got the start for Nashville and was dizzy from chasing puck out his bet, he surrendered four goals on five shots before getting the hook after the Panarin goal at 9:09.
“We’ve just got to be a lot sharper in a lot of [areas] of the game,” Predators forward Colton Sissons said. “This is a part of the journey. We have a new group. We’ve been through a lot of adversity. Even the best of teams, look at Pittsburgh last night, they lost 6-0 with Sidney Crosby on that team. This happens in this League. It’s all about how you bounce back.”
Juuse Saros yielded two goals in relief, and made 26 saves.
