SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Rampage (16-18-7-0) had a 41-22 advantage in shots, but fell to the San Diego Gulls (18-16-1-1) 2-1 in front of 2,982 at the AT&T Center on Tuesday night. Alex Belzile scored a late goal to bring the Rampage within one, but the Silver and Black were unable to convert on a flurry of shots at the end of regulation.
The Rampage held the Gulls to just three shots on the opening frame, tying a season record for shots allowed in a period. Despite putting 11 shots of their own on net, the Rampage and the Gulls were scoreless after 20 minutes.
San Diego struck early in the second period when Zac Larraza tipped in a Simon Despres blast from just inside the blue line, giving the Gulls a 1-0 lead at 3:27.
Late in the stanza, the Rampage turned the puck over inside the zone, leading to a breakaway opportunity for Kenny Ryan. Ryan, chased by Mason Geertsen and Hubert Labrie, was tripped up in the slot, resulting in a penalty shot, which he capitalized on to give the Gulls a 2-0 lead at the end of the frame.
Belzile tallied his first goal in a Rampage uniform at 18:43 of the third period, but the Silver and Black were unable to pot another goal to force overtime.
