SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls announced today that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed right wing Kyle Thomas to a one-year contract through the 2017-18 AHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Thomas, 27 (1/31/90), split last season between the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) and the Fort Wayne Komets (ECHL). He made his AHL debut with Cleveland in 2016-17, recording 1-1=2 points with four penalty minutes (PIM) in 12 games. The 6-0, 192-pound forward spent the majority of last season with Fort Wayne, setting career highs in numerous offensive categories, including points (27-42=69), goals (27), assists (42), plus/minus (+19) and PIM (63) in 58 games. He co-led the Komets with 10 power play goals, and ranked second in points and goals, and third in assists and plus/minus. In 10 Kelly Cup Playoff games with Fort Wayne, Thomas tallied 4-4=8 points with eight PIM, ranking second on the club in points.
The Waltham, Mass. native has appeared in 149 career ECHL games with Fort Wayne (2015-17), Quad City (2014-15) and Reading (2013-14), collecting 45-71=116 points with a +27 rating and 130 PIM. He also earned 7-9=16 points with 16 PIM in 26 career Kelly Cup playoff contests. Thomas also scored 9-8=17 points with 18 PIM in 24 games with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2014-15.
Thomas played four seasons at Norwich University (ECAC, Division III) from 2009-13, collecting 68-58=126 points with 104 PIM in 114 games, and helped lead the Cadets to the 2010 Division III national championship.
