STOCKTON, Calif. – The San Diego Gulls (2-5-1-0) fell 7-3 to the Stockton Heat (5-2-1-0) in the final game of a four-game road trip in front of 5,052 fans at Stockton Arena . The Gulls head home to San Diego after finishing their first road trip of the season 0-3-1 record.
For the second straight night, Stockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead and piled on the pressure with two goals apiece from Matt Frattin and Andrew Mangiapane. Morgan Klimchuk, Mike Angelidis and Oliver Kylington added goals for the Heat who improved to 3-0 over San Diego this season.
Frattin opened the scoring with a power play goal at 2:25 of the first period and Mangiapane doubled Stockton’s lead only 2:35 later with his first of the game, giving the Heat another 2-0 lead over San Diego.
Kevin Roy scored two goals in a span of 4:15 in the first period to give the Gulls life as he helped San Diego rally back from a 2-0 deficit going into the first intermission. Roy recorded his first career multi-goal game and second career multi-point game (last: 1-1=2 points Oct. 26 vs. TEX).
Stockton’s Matt Frattin put the Heat in front again with a power play goal, his second of the game, at 1:05 of the second period, while Mangiapane added his second goal of the game on the man advantage to make it a two-goal game midway through the second period at 10:07.
Zac Larraza scored his first goal of the season for the Gulls at 2:04 of the third period to cut Stockton’s lead to 4-3. Stockton answered with three straight goals from Klimchuk, Angelidis and Kylington in a span of 9:20 to put the contest out of reach.
San Diego goaltender Matt Hackett stopped 23-of-30 shots, picking up his third loss of the season (0-3-0-0) in his fourth appearance. Stockton’s Jon Gillies started between the pipes for the Heat, making six saves on the eight shots he faced. Gillies was replaced by netminder Tom McCollum after the first intermission, with McCollum picking up his first win of the season after stopping 19-of-20 shots in relief.
The Gulls gave up four power play goals as Stockton’s man advantage went 4-of-8, the most power play goals San Diego has conceded in a contest this season. In contrast, the Gulls power play went 0-for-4. Stockton outshot San Diego 30-28.
