The San Diego Gulls were shutout by the Coachella Valley Firebirds in a Black Friday showdown tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 5-0.
Coachella Valley took an early lead, netting two to end the first frame.
The second frame consisted of multiple chances with 10 shots on goal by San Diego, but Firebirds goalie Nikke Kokko would not allow anything by him.
The Firebirds did not let up as they found three more to take a 5-0 lead in the third period.
Vyacheslav Buteyets made his third start in goal this season, saving 18 shots. His efforts between the pipes kept the Gulls in contention.
Despite the shutout the Gulls went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, marking another perfect night this season for the kill.
San Diego will take a weeklong rest before returning to Pechanga Arena San Diego on Friday, Dec. 5 where they will battle it out with the Texas Stars for the first time this season (7 p.m. PT).
