Gulls Can’t Outdo Roadrunners in Close 2-1 Defeat

Friday night’s fight was a gritty one for the San Diego Gulls, who gave their all on the ice at Pechanga Arena San Diego until the dying seconds, but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 decision to the Tucson Roadrunners.

Couldn't Complete the Comeback

It didn’t take long for the Roadrunners to begin the action as Tucson’s Austin Poganski struck at 2:48 with a shorthanded goal to kick off the opening frame.

The Gulls got on the board in the middle frame, as at 8:25, right wing Jaxsen Wiebe netted his fourth goal of the season, beating Dylan Wells to heighten tensions on ice.

The final frame erupted with both sides grappling to uneven the score. At 13:49, Curtis Douglas cashed in on the net, bringing back the Roadrunners’ one-goal lead with his second of the season.

The Gulls battled until the end, though this time around, they couldn’t come upon the game-equalizing goal by the end of regulation.

Despite allowing two Tucson goals, Calle Clang was a rock in the net, stopping 23 of 25 shots.

Andrew Agozzino (9-23=32) and Olen Zellweger (8-18=26) tallied assists on San Diego’ lone goal of the evening.
