Gulls Can’t Figure Out Firebirds

The San Diego Gulls fell to the Coachella Valley Firebirds at Pechanga Arena San Diego tonight, 5-2.

So Not Cool

Coachella Valley got two on the board first, but San Diego responded immediately. Justin Bailey found the first, and just 50 seconds later Ryan Carpenter tipped the puck in off Noah Warren’s shot to make it a tie game. Bailey and Carpenter have both logged 2-2=4 points in their past four games.

Roland McKeown logged his 200th career AHL point after picking up an assist on Bailey’s goal. The defenseman has found 48 goals and 152 assists in his 560 game appearances in the AHL. Sasha Pastujov also picked up an assist on the goal, giving him 1-2=3 points in his last two games played.

San Diego showed their resilience by not letting up late in the third. Defense was strong as they fended off two shots on the empty net to keep themselves in the hunt. Despite putting multiple shots on goal, the team could not find a way to get past Nikke Kokko and relieve the deficit.

The goal was protected by Ville Husso for the 17th time this season. The goaltender saved 20 of 26 total shots.

San Diego will take the rest of the weekend off before seeing the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday Jan. 7 back at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PT).
