Guildford secure fifth with win over Storm

Guildford Flames secured fifth place in the standings with a 2-1 victory over Manchester Storm on Sunday night, leaving Storm to finish sixth and without a win in the final week of the season.

“Playoffs get amped up and more physical, so it’s nice that the last few games we’ve had will really prepare us for that,” said Flames’ Tyler Preziuso. “I think we’ve been finding our game a bit more recently, especially our systems. A big thing for us is we’re out-competing teams now.”

The first period showcased strong end-to-end action, with both goaltenders delivering solid performances. Early penalties saw both teams test each other physically, but neither side was able to break the deadlock.

As the second period progressed, both teams continued to create chances, with Manchester slightly edging the opportunities. Justin Fazio made a number of key saves, including denying a one-timer on a Storm powerplay to keep the game scoreless.

At 35:48, Manchester opened the scoring as Kyle Locke fed Gary Haden, who found Tyler Hinam unmarked to slot past Fazio.

“After last night, we wanted to make sure we played well and the right way,” said Locke. “The final result is what it is, but I think we are in a good spot heading into the playoffs and we’re excited for them.

“Weninger in net was fantastic tonight. Guildford always put the pressure on, but having him back there, and Drew DeRidder back home, gives us a lot of belief that we can do some serious damage in the playoffs.”

Guildford levelled 3:53 into the third period as Tyler Busch set up Preziuso. Less than six minutes later, Mathieu Gosselin gave the Flames the lead they would not relinquish.

Weninger, who had been excellent, was pulled with 70 seconds remaining as Storm searched for an equaliser, but the closest they came was a Nick Welsh effort that went narrowly wide. Guildford held on to secure the win.

“The team message is to keep working hard and keep out-competing teams,” added Preziuso. “If you can do that in the playoffs, you have a big chance of winning.”
