Guildford lose to Cardiff, 3-2, in OT

In a penalty filled game, including pair of Jonathan Racine fights that sent him to an early shower, Flames picked up a point, but it was penalties that undid them as they gave up the tying goal during a 3 on 5 kill in the last 2 minutes then suffered through the Devils OT Winner during a 3 on 4 stretch, falling 3-2 on home ice.

Despite more than a minute of 5 on 3 in Flames favour early, Justin Fazio and Christian Stoever were able to force a scoreless opening set with the former making 17 saves while the latter stopped 7 through 20 minutes of play.

Early in the 2nd, Spectrum’s men did convert a powerplay with Lewis Hook getting his stick on the opening goal, but in the 35th minute Joey Martin squared it.  Flames looked to have an advantage for most of the close of the 2nd when Cardiff took a double minor for high sticking. Unfortunately, a Josh Waller penalty wiped out half of that time, but another Cardiff penalty allowed Jack Jacome to nudge Flames in front 66 seconds from the buzzer.  An ensuing call against Devils immediately after the goal put the Flames powerplay back to work at the end of the period and to start the 3rd.

Flames were unable to convert before Devils returned to the full skating complement early in the set. With just over 2 minutes remaining, a pair of Flames penalties put Devils up 2 skaters and they made it count thanks to Martin just over a minute from time.  Unfortunately, for the home team, a late Matt Alvaro penalty meant Devils would end the game 5 on 3 and begin OT still short a man where Jimmy Oligny won it for the visitors 41 seconds into the tiebreaking period.

Fazio finished the night with 51 saves against 54 shots while Stoever went 18 for 20.
