Guildford double up on Cardiff

Taz Burman backstopped Guildford Flames to back-to-back wins over Cardiff Devils as they recorded a 5-3 victory at the Vindico Arena on New Year’s Day.

A Brett Ferguson pass sent Josh MacDonald through to beat Taz Burman and open the scoring for the Devils just 58 seconds into the game. Guildford were level just over two minutes later, however, as former Devil Josh Waller beat Ben Bowns.

Cardiff hit the crossbar with five and a half minutes remaining in the period and, on their very next attack, Cole Sanford saw his breakaway chance also come back off the iron.

Guildford went ahead early in period two. Lewis Hook’s fake created space and produced an excellent pass to the back post for Matt Alvaro to tap home only 49 seconds into the period. MacDonald tied the game for the Devils just as a 5-on-3 advantage had expired, but only 48 seconds later Cardiff were caught on the rush and Jamal Watson fired past Bowns to restore the Flames’ lead.

Alvaro extended Guildford’s advantage to two at 2:45 of the third period to give the visitors some breathing room.

With 7:16 to play, a throw on net from Gleason Fournier went all the way through, possibly deflecting off Joey Martin, to bring the Devils back within one.

Cardiff pulled Bowns with 90 seconds remaining but immediately turned the puck over, allowing Ethan Strang to shoot into the empty net from his own end and seal the Flames’ win.
