Growlers tamed by Railers, 4-2

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers dropped the opening game of the weekend in a tight 4-2 loss to the Worcester Railers on Friday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Anthony Repaci opened the scoring for the Railers midway through the first period with a powerplay blast to make it 1-0 Worcester.

Reece Newkirk doubled the Railers advantage in the final minute of the first with an impressive individual effort to put Worcester up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Zach O’Brien got one back for the Growlers two minutes into the second period with a powerplay one-timer to cut it to 2-1 for the visitors.

Bobby Butler restored the two goal lead for Worcester as he slotted home a loose puck in the Newfoundland zone to make it 3-1 Railers five minutes into the middle frame.

After Orrin Centazzo replied for Newfoundland with another powerplay strike 6:02 before the 2nd intermission, Repaci notched his second of the game a minute later to make it 4-2 Worcester going into the final period of play.

Henrik Tikkanen turned away all 11 shots he faced in the third period to secure a 4-2 victory for the Railers.
