ST JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers edged out the Iowa Heartlanders for the second straight game in a 3-2 overtime win on Friday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Both Dryden McKay and Hunter Jones stood tall in a goalless open frame as both sides settled for a 0-0 score line after the opening 20 minutes.
Jake Durflinger opened the scoring for the Heartlanders five minutes into the middle frame as he made no mistake on a big rebound to put Iowa ahead 1-0.
Zach O’Brien replied just a minute later for Newfoundland with a nifty powerplay deke before Yuki Miura snatched back the lead for the visitors two moments after O’Brien’s tally to make it 2-1 Heartlanders going into the third period.
Chris Martenet brought things back to even six minutes into the third period as Brandon Kruse spotted the big man backdoor for a tap in to make it 2-2 and force an overtime period.
O’Brien made it a pair of powerplay goals with a one-timed blast 4:22 into overtime to secure a 3-2 victory for Newfoundland.
