ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers secured a series sweep over the Worcester Railers with a thrilling 6-4 win on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Nolan Vesey opened the scoring for Worcester with their first shot of the game five minutes into the first period on a breakaway to make it 1-0 Railers.
Nick Fea doubled the Railers advantage with a tap-in six minutes before the end of the opening period to put Worcester ahead 2-0 after the 1st.
Matt Sredl got the Growlers on the board midway through the middle frame with a seeing eye point shot to cut it to 2-1 Railers.
Newfoundland made that momentum count as Zach O’Brien and Pavel Gogolev scored 43 seconds apart to give the Growlers a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Christian Evers got things back to level on behalf of the Railers with a wrister through traffic to make it 3-3 with 14:55 left in regulation.
Quinn Ryan temporarily gave Worcester a temporary lead exactly halfway through the third before Gogolev replied 100 seconds later with his second of the night to level proceedings at 4-4.
Keenan Suthers found the decisive strike four minutes before the end of regulation as he elected to keep and shoot on a 2-on-1 and sniped one top corner for the 5-4 lead.
Todd Skirving sealed it with an empty netter to make it a 6-4 Newfoundland final.
