ST JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers swept their series with the Iowa HeartlandersH in a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Pavel Gogolev opened the scoring on the powerplay with a one-timed blast six minutes into the first period to make it 1-0 Newfoundland.
Todd Skirving doubled the Growlers lead three minutes before the first intermission with a seeing eye shot through traffic to make it 2-0 Newfoundland after 20 minutes of play.
Tommy Parrottino got one back for the Heartlanders three minutes into the middle frame with a hot shot from the top of the circle to cut it to 2-1 Newfoundland.
Skirving notched his second of the night, twice as nice as the first, with a rocket over the glove of Hunter Jones five minutes before the second intermission for a 3-1 Growlers lead after two.
Zach White snuck one home from a tight angle three minutes into the third to make it a goal game with Iowa trailing 3-2.
James Sanchez found an equalizer for the visitors with 16 seconds left in regulation to force overtime for the third straight game.
Nolan Walker ensured Newfoundland didn’t send their fans home disappointed as he sniped one home inside 90 seconds of overtime to make it a 4-3 Growlers final.
