The Newfoundland Growlers made it a clean weekend sweep with a 5-3 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday evening at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Zach O’Brien opened the scoring inside the first two minutes of the game with a quick wrister from the faceoff dot to make it 1-0 Newfoundland.
Joe Widmar replied for the Admirals with 2:14 left in the 1st as he finished off a broken play in the Growlers zone to make it 1-1 after the opening period.
Derian Plouffe picked up his first of the season with a penalty kill tally midway through the middle frame to briefly put the Growlers ahead 2-1 before Aaron Thow replied for the Admirals just two minutes later to make it 2-2.
Plouffe notched his second of the period 53 seconds before the 2nd intermission when he buried one from a tight angle to put Newfoundland ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
After Danny Katic found yet another reply for the Admirals with 4:38 remaining in regulation, Orrin Centazzo scored a highlight reel backhand breakaway just 18 seconds later for the Growlers to make it 4-3 Newofundland.
O’Brien sealed the deal for the Growlers with his second of the night moments later to make it a 5-3 Newfoundland victory.
