Growlers sneak past Thunder 5-4 in shootout

ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers secured their spot in the Kelly Cup Playoffs with a thrilling 5-4 shootout win over the Adirondack Thunder on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Shane Harper and Travis Broughman both scored on a Thunder 5-on-3 within 30 seconds midway through the first period to give Adirondack a 2-0 lead.

Newfoundland found goals in bunches themselves as Nolan Walker and Adam Dawe both buried a couple minutes apart late in the 1st to level it at 2-2 after 20 minutes.

Both sides kept trading punches in the middle frame as the Thunder got goals from Grant Jozefek and Ryan Smith with Dawe picking up his second of the night sandwiched in between to make it 4-3 Adirondack going into the third period.

Keenan Suthers played hero for the hosts as he tapped home with 2:03 left in regulation to force overtime.

After a back-and-forth overtime which provided no solution, a shootout was needed where it took 11 rounds to find a winner before Derian Plouffe provided the decisive shot in a nail biting 5-4 Growlers victory.

Newfoundland head to the sunshine state where they’ll take on the Florida Everblades on Wednesday at 9pm.
