ST JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers extended their winning streak to five games with a tight 3-1 win over the Maine Mariners on Friday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Reid Stefanson opened the scoring for Maine in a tight opening period 2:42 before the first intermission with a powerplay strike to put the Mariners ahead 1-0 after the 1st.
Zach O’Brien nabbed a powerplay goal of his own in his return to the Newfoundland lineup just 22 seconds into the middle frame to make it 1-1.
Some strong goaltending at both ends kept things at 1-1 after 40 minutes thanks to the standout play of both Dryden McKay and Michael DiPietro.
O’Brien gave the Growlers their first lead of the game with 17:26 left in regulation as he beat DiPietro with a seeing eye shot off the faceoff to give Newfoundland a 2-1 lead.
McKay stopped all five shots he faced in the 3rd and Jack Badini hit the empty Maine net to secure a 3-1 Newfoundland victory.
