ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers secured back-to-back wins over the Worcester Railers with a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory on Friday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Jake Schultz and Jordan Kaplan struck seven and 11 minutes into the first period respectively for the Railers, the latter a powerplay goal, to give Worcester an early 2-0 lead.
Newfoundland made a late first period push count as they got goals from Zach Solow and Jack Badini 100 seconds apart to tie things up at 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.
Nick Fea gave Worcester back the lead temporarily with a breakaway goal two minutes into the middle frame before Isaac Johnson replied for Newfoundland with a slick individual effort three minutes later to bring it to 3-3 heading into the third period.
The final 20 minutes of regulation settled nothing as seven minutes of 3-on-3 overtime would be needed to settle proceedings.
Pavel Gogolev ensured a shootout would not be necessary as he beat Henrik Tikkanen with a powerplay blast two minutes into overtime to give the Growlers a 4-3 win.
These two teams conclude their series Saturday night at 7 pm.
