The Newfoundland Growlers got back to winning ways on the road with a 3-1 victory against the Maine Mariners on Friday night at Cross Insurance Arena.
Fedor Gordeev opened the scoring for Maine late in the 1st period as his blast from the point got through everybody to put the Mariner ahead 1-0 with 3:21 to go in the opening 20 minutes.
Brett Budgell replied for the visiting Growlers just a moment later when he banged home the rebound off an Axel Rindell point shot to make it 1-1 after the first.
Neither team could find a breakthrough in the second period as both goalies stood tall to keep things level at 1-1 heading into the third period.
Todd Skirving gave the Growlers their first lead of the night five minutes into the final frame as he finished in tight following a heavy James Melindy slapshot to make it 2-1 Newfoundland.
Tyler Boland sealed the deal with an empty net tally five seconds before the end of regulation to secure a 3-1 win for Newfoundland.
