ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers concluded their weekend series with a 5-4 overtime win over the Reading Royals on Sunday afternoon at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Simon Kubicek opened the scoring for Newfoundland with 6:10 left in the 1st period as his point shot beat Ryan Kenny to make it 1-0 Growlers after 20 minutes of play.
Garrett McFadden replied for Reading six minutes into the middle frame as his centering pass deflected off a Growler and into the Newfoundland net to make it 1-1.
Both sides traded punches moments later as Todd Skirving gave the Growlers a temporary 2-1 lead before Max Newton struck back for the Royals three minutes later to level it at 2-2.
Derian Plouffe once again put the hosts ahead late in the second putting Newfoundland up 3-2 after 40 minutes before Will MacKinnon once again had a Reading response five minutes into the 3rd to make it 3-3 with 15:45 left in regulation time.
Brett Boeing gave the visitors their first lead of the game midway through the third period before Pavel Gogolev blasted one home on the powerplay with 5:34 left in regulation to force overtime for the second time in as many games.
Gogolev would once again make the man advantage count in the 3-on-3 overtime period as he one-timed the game winning goal past Kenny 71 seconds into OT to give Newfoundland a come from behind 5-4 victory.
