Growlers maul Mariners, 5-3

ST JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers finished the weekend on a high note with a 5-3 win over the Maine Mariners on Sunday evening at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Brennan Kapcheck opened the scoring for Newfoundland with a one-timed blast from the point six minutes into the first to make it 1-0 Growlers.

Derian Plouffe made it 2-0 Newfoundland three minutes later as he pounced on a loose puck in the Mariners slot.

Cam Askew and Fedor Gordeev struck twice inside two minutes for Maine to quickly level things up at 2-2 after the opening 20 minutes.

Nolan Walker gave Newfoundland a 3-2 lead 90 seconds into the middle frame with a slick backhand finish on the powerplay before Matthew Santos evened it up at 3-3 28 seconds later for the Mariners.

Zach Solow beat Michael DiPietro up over the glove from his knees five minutes later to give the Growlers a 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

Orrin Centazzo made it five for the Growlers with 5:32 left in regulation as they came out on top in a 5-3 thriller.

Newfoundland stay at home to host Adirondack on Wednesday night at 7pm.
