Growlers grappled 5-2 by Mariners

ST JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers lost for the first time in six contests as they fell 5-2 to the Maine Mariners on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Pavel Gogolev opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game with a powerplay strike to give Newfoundland an early 1-0 lead.

Alex-Olivier Voyer replied for Maine four minutes later as he beat Luke Cavallin just as a Mariners man advantage expired to level it at 1-1.

Isaac Johnson nabbed the lead back for Newfoundland with 3:50 left in the 1st as he was the beneficiary of a slick Gogolev pass in the slot where he made no mistake to put the Growlers ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Chase Zieky got the Mariners level once again as he finished off some slick powerplay passing to tie it at 2-2 midway through the 2nd.

Maine got two more late second period goals through Reid Stefanson and Matthew Santos to take a 4-2 lead into the third and final period of play.

Santos grabbed a second late in the 3rd period to seal a 5-2 win for Maine.
