Maine jumped out an early two goal lead with goals from Pat Shea and Grant Gabriele just past the midway point of the first period.
Pavel Gogolev replied for Newfoundland just 15 seconds after Gabriele’s goal before Zach Solow sniped one past Mike DiPietro on a 5-on-3 with four minutes left in the opening period to tie it at 2-2.
Nate Kallen ensured the Mariners held the lead heading into the first intermission as he beat Dryden McKay from the top of the circle with 97 seconds left in the 1st to make it 3-2 Maine after 20 minutes.
The Mariners picked up where they left off in the first period in the opening moments of the middle frame as Gabriel Chicoine and Curtis Hall got in on the scoring to put Maine ahead 5-2.
Scoring in bunches continued late into the second period as Orrin Centazzo and Nolan Walker both struck for the Growlers inside a minute to get the visitors within one, trailing 5-4 heading into the third period.
Centazzo’s second of the game 30 seconds into the third temporarily tied the game at 5-5 before Shea joined the two-goal club to give the Mariners a 6-5 lead with 14:50 to go.
Newfoundland proceeded to riddle off four unanswered goals to cap off the contest as Michael Joyaux and Derian Plouffe got on the board, the latter a shorthanded tally midway through the 3rd to make it 7-6 Growlers.
Solow notched his second of the game with a sweet solo effort to make it 8-6 with just over seven minutes to play and Centazzo sealed his hat-trick into an empty net with 2:20 left in regulation as the Growlers won a 15-goal thriller by a final score of 9-6.
