ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers bounced back from Friday’s defeat with a 7-3 win over the Trois-Rivières Lions on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Nolan Walker banked one in from behind the Lions goal just 34 seconds into regulation to make it 1-0 Newfoundland on the opening shift.
Zach O’Brien fired one home on a 5-on-3 in the closing moments of the first to put the Growlers up 2-0 after 20 minutes played.
Zach Solow scored twice in a seven-minute span in the second period, the second a highlight reel individual effort, to make it 4-0 Newfoundland midway through the middle frame.
Trois-Rivières showed some pushback in the backend of the second period as Jonathan Joannette and Ryan Francis both beat Dryden McKay to cut it to 4-2 Growlers going into the 3rd.
Pavel Gogolev provided some insurance for the Growlers with a tight angle powerplay finish midway through the third before Todd Skirving got in on the action moments later to make it 6-2 Newfoundland.
Cedric Montminy got one back for the Lions in the closing moments but the visitors would get no closer as Keenan Suthers scored at the buzzer for Newfoundland to secure a 7-3 victory.
