ST JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers dropped their second straight contest in a 6-4 loss to the Worcester Railers on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Nolan Walker opened the scoring for Newfoundland two minutes into the opening period as his attempted pass landed right back on his stick at the side door where he made no mistake to put the Growlers ahead 1-0.
After Newfoundland started on the front foot, Worcester grabbed hold of the game late in the first as Brent Beaudoin, Jared Brandt and Reece Newkirk each scored in the span of 70 seconds as the Railers jumped out to a 3-1 lead.
Bobby Butler nabbed a fourth Railers goal four minutes before the first intermission to bring it to 4-1 Worcester after 20 minutes of play.
Myles McGurty and Philip Beaulieu added further insurance for Worcester in the first five minutes of the middle frame to extend the visitors lead to 6-1.
Showing plenty of fight to get back into the contest, the Growlers got a pair of goals from Zach O’Brien as well as a single from Brett Budgell before the end of the second period to claw back into the game, cutting it to 6-4 Worcester going into the 3rd period.
Ken Appleby turned away all 13 shots he faced in the third period as Worcester held on for a 6-4 road victory.
