Growlers draw even in Eastern Conference Finals with 2-1 OT win

ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers evened up the Eastern Conference Final with a 2-1 Game Four overtime win over the Florida Everblades on Thursday night at the Mary Brown’s Centre.

Both goalies stood tall in the opening frame as Florida outshot Newfoundland 9-8 through 20 minutes but it remained 0-0 after the first.

Joe Pendenza got the game’s first goal three minutes into the second period as he finished off a 2-on-1 rush to make it 1-0 Everblades.

Todd Skirving tied things up with five minutes to go in the middle frame as he cleaned up a broken play in the blue paint to make it 1-1 heading into the third period.

Neither side could find a winner in the third period as regulation time settled nothing with the game overtime bound tied at 1-1.

After a second overtime frame seemed inevitable thanks in large part to a number of game saving stops from Luke Cavallin, Jonny Tychonick played hero for the Growlers as he sniped one on the powerplay with 7.4 seconds left in the first OT period to give Newfoundland a thrilling 2-1 win, tying the series up at 2-2 in the process.
