ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers advanced to the North Division Final thanks to a 3-0 Game Five win over the Adirondack Thunder on Sunday evening at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Newfoundland picked up where they left off in Game 4 as they got three goals in the opening 20 minutes from Pavel Gogolev, Mikko Kokkonen and Todd Skirving to give the Growlers a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Neither side found the back of the net in a feisty middle frame to see the Growlers head into the third period up 3-0.
Dryden McKay turned away all 20 shots he faced to secure his first postseason shutout, sending the Growlers to the second round in style.
Pavel Gogolev had a 3-point night (1G, 2A). Dryden McKay made 20 saves for the victory.
Newfoundland now face Reading in a rematch of last year’s North Division Final.
