Grightmire is ready; so are the McCoys

It’s Homecoming Weekend for the Dundas Real McCoys of the Allan Cup Hockey league this weekend, and President and General Manager Don Robertson and the rest of his crew could not be happier.

After two long years on the road while upgrades were made to the venerable JL Grightmire Arena, the McCoys will skate for the first time in a long time on the ice surface of their favourite rink.

While the Harry Howell Arena was nice, there is, as they say no place like home!

“We are very excited to get back to Grightmire this Friday (November 1st) for the Dundas Sports Wall of Fame Game, and let everyone see the building after the upgrades,” said Robertson.  The McCoys play host to the Hamilton Steelhawks at 7:30 p.m.

The next action for Dundas will be Friday, November 8th when they travel to Hamilton to play the Steelhawks in the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.  The club returns home on Friday, November 15th to play the Dunlops in the Grightmire Arena.  Both games get under way at 7:30 p.m.

Brantford Blast’s Tim Kennedy (10) blasts a shot at Dundas Real McCoys goalkeeper Mike Mole without any success.  Brantford edged Dundas 3-2 in overtime Friday night in the Civic Centre.

Prior to Friday’s Real McCoys Wall of Fame Game, fans will watch as the new Inductees Steve Aglor, Bob Myers, Nick Genovese, Helmut Classen, and Deborah Lee Eldridge are honoured.

In addition, the Real McCoys will pay tribute to long-time statistician Mike Dyer, and former player David Aussem, both of whom recently passed away.  Dyer was an integral part of the organization for the past 19 seasons during which time he only missed two games and attended every team practice.  He was a meticulous statistician, and a tribute to every statistician, as is often said, “Only statisticians count”.

Aussem was a featured player first with Provincial Junior A Burlington Cougars and then with the Dundas Real McCoys.  Beginning with the 2001 season, Dave played 78 games with the McCoys over five seasons.  Aussem played with the same heart and passion as his father, Gerry, did with the old Intermediate Dundas Merchants.

The 2019-20 season has started on the right skate for the Real McCoys as they picked up four points with an 8-5 victory over the Whitby Dunlops on Saturday night after a 3-2 overtime loss in Brantford to the Blast the previous night.  A win in the ACH is worth three points in the standings and a loss in overtime is worth one.

“Getting points in both weekend road games was a great start. Ron (Bernacci) and I are very happy with the five new additions to the line-up, and the return of Kevin Harvey,” added Robertson.

“We are finally getting the depth we have been looking for.  Bernacci has the group working well early, and following his game plan. We are looking forward to having the Steelhawks at our home opener.”

Dan LaPointe leads the McCoys in scoring with three goals and one assist for four points in two games.  Trevor Atkinson also had four points and Justin DaSilva added three.  Brad Bonello scored twice over the weekend including a game-winning goal.
