Greiss, Red Wings blank Bolts

In Detroit, the Red Wings displayed a level of defense worthy of a playoff team. Unfortunately, this season is not that campaign.

On Saturday, the Red Wings defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 1-0, in a matinee, after penalties.

Thomas Greiss made 33 saves in the win.

“I’m feeling good, but I’m also getting some breaks right now,”  Greiss  said. “They had a couple 2-on-1s tonight where they couldn’t put the puck in an open net. That’s what you need.”

It was his second straight shutout.

“The way you win games like this is with hard work from everyone on the team,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We aren’t going to make the playoffs, but we still had guys laying out to block shots with three games left in the season.”

The Lightning are tied for second place in the Central Division with the Florida Panthers, both teams are two points back of the Carolina Hurricanes.

“I like the way we’ve been playing, and we did everything we could to win that hockey game,” Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said. “Every point is magnified right now, but I’d happily take that game all over again.”

Sam Gagner was credited with the deciding strike in the skills competition.

Curtis McElhinney made 15 saves in the shutout loss for the Lightning.

“When you don’t score there, you are playing with fire,” Cooper said. “We came close, but the goalie stopped one and the crossbar stopped the other one. Give [Greiss] credit. He played well.”
