Great Too, practice makes perfect

For me, there is nothing better than sitting down to a good read.  Well, that’s not exactly true.

A good read inside an illustrated book?  Now that is a perfect play.

I borrowed that from the illustrated book, “Great Too“.

Great Too is a follow up to “Great: and was written by Lauri Holomis and Glen Gretzky.

The book was inspired by Walter (Coach Wally) Gretzky, father of Wayne and Glen.

The story focuses on the Perfect Play and recalls the concept of skating to where the puck is going, not where its been.

Taylor is a linemate of Wayne on a team guided by Coach Wally.  Taylor is a part of the Perfect Play and his piece of the action is critical to the end result, a goal.

Not giving away the Perfect Play, you will need to get a copy of the book!

Taylor’s part in the play requires finesse, anticipation, and execution.  At first all works well, but distractions have an effect in Taylor’s confidence.

Wayne provides support to his linemate, but Coach Wally is the figure who provides the real lesson for Taylor, and anyone who reads this story.

Practice! Because everyone makes mistakes as Wayne and Coach Wally tell Taylor.

Practice! Because you can always get better.

Practice! Because you want to be the best skater, player and person you can be.

The message of Great Too is simple, but eloquently told by Holomis and Gretzky.  Practice makes for near perfection on the Perfect Play and team success.

There are other, subtle messages and lessons in this illustrated story.  The concept of mistakes being always present, and the lessons of being part of a team are clear, but never ham-handed in delivery.

Coach Wally is that firm figure to Taylor and his teammates, and provides all the best messaging to struggling Taylor who is looking to be his best.

Great Too is wonderfully illustrated by Kevin Sylvester, who matched the emotional travails of Taylor with the passion of Wayne and the steadiness of Coach Wally.

From “wolfing down a slice of pizza” to “feet shaking” because of the crowd noise, the words and illustrations are braided together in a perfect play.

Great Too is available on Amazon.  This is a great book with a terrific message for anyone, young or old, trying to learn hockey, mathematics, or guitar. Everyone makes mistakes, be the best you can be, and practice.
