Grant leads Ducks over Blues

In St Louis, the Blues were put out of tune by the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday in a 4-1 loss.

Derek Grant struck for a hat trick, his first in the NHL.

“I only had one in the [AHL] and I think I had about 50 two-goal games before I finally got one and it was against Binghamton, who I had played most of my games with at the time. That was a cool one for sure.”

John Gibson made 37 saves to get the win as the Ducks improved to 10-9-2.

“Derek’s effect on the scoreboard is usually by keeping it out of our net,” Ducks head coach Dallas Eakins said. “For him to put three in their net is obviously huge for our group. We’ll take the scoring from wherever we can right now.”

Vince Dunn scored the lone goal for the Blues.

St Louis dropped to 12-4-5.

“I don’t think we had the energy that we needed to have the last couple games,” the Blues’ Alex Pietrangelo said. “I think we could have played a little bit smarter tonight. It’s always tough on the second of back-to-backs. We kind of gave them everything they got.”

Ryan Getzlaf had a single marker in the win for the Ducks.

“It’s always nice to score,” Grant said. “When we get ready for games, our line, our first mindset is to be hard to play against, [and] second, be good in the D-zone. We start a lot of times in our D-zone and that’s the most important thing for us. Obviously you want to be able to go play and use your offensive abilities and contribute, especially when we’ve been struggling to score goals as a team, so it’s always nice to get that.”

Jordan Binnington made 21 saves in the loss.

“We had some opportunities and we didn’t bury it,” Ryan O’Reilly said. “They got the lead and it was tough. All they did was just shoot the puck out of the zone and chase it down and try to kill momentum, but we have to find a way to put the puck in the net.”
