Granlund’s OT goal sends Wild past Kings, 5-4

In St Paul Monday, newly acquired Ryan White potted a goal and added an assist for the Minnesota Wild in a 5-4 overtime win over the Los Angles Kings.

“They just kind of gave us the base of what was going to happen out there and just told us to go out there and play hockey,” White said. “I think that’s the way to go about it on the day like this. That’s what I was telling myself all day, that it’s just hockey, so just go out there and play. I got lucky. I had a couple good linemates out there tonight that made things easy on me. I was just trying to do the right things and got rewarded.”

It took Mikael Granlund just 12 seconds to score the game-winner in extra time.

Nino Niederreiter, Jordan Schroeder and Jason Zucker also had goals for the Wild as Minnesota improved to 40-14-6.

Nick Shore, Tanner Pearson, Jake Muzzin, and Marian Gaborik scored for the Kings.

Despite the offensive push the Kings were unable to cobble together a reasonable defensive effort.

“It doesn’t matter if we score four when we give up five,” Shore said. “We had a couple breakdowns and [Quick] had some huge saves for us tonight. We’re just going to have to get after it tomorrow.”

Jonathan Quick made 30 saves in the loss as the Kings dropped to 30-27-5.

Zach Parise and Jason Pominville missed the game for the Wild after being diagnosed with mumps.

“Hopefully we get through these next couple of days and no one else comes down with any symptoms. But if you’re going to be passing [it] around, the celebration after [Granlund’s] goal is definitely a lot of gloves in face and excitement, so if someone had it in that pile then we all got it, so we’ll see it what happens,” Minnesota’s Eric Staal said.
