Goligoski signs two-year, $4 million contract with Wild

Alex Goligoski signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $2 million.

The 36-year-old defenseman could have been an unrestricted free agent after this season. He has scored 28 points (two goals, 26 assists) in 58 games, his first season with the Wild after agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract July 28.

Goligoski, a native of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, attended the University of Minnesota from 2004-07.

“It’s home. You know, I think everyone has that desire to play for their home state at some point if they have a team that plays there,” he said after signing with the Wild in July. “And I think it’s a great fit for me. I think the team’s good too. That was the main thing for me was I want to play some winning hockey and have a chance. … Just really impressive, so I think it’s going to be a great fit and [I’m] excited.”

Selected in the second round (No. 61) of the 2004 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Goligoski has scored 457 points (85 goals, 372 assists) in 982 regular-season games for the Penguins, Dallas Stars, Arizona Coyotes and Wild. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009 and has scored 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 43 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
