Golden Knights win, 4-3, on skills Marchessault scores double in win

On The Strip, Jonathan Marchessault hit for a double on Friday night in a 4-3 win for the Golden Knights over the New Jersey Devils. Shea Thoedore scored the only goal in a four-round skills competition for the win.

“‘Marchy’ finished well, Jack’s had a lot of juice lately, Barbashev makes a lot of small-area plays,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “The games are tighter. … Points are just valuable, and players recognize that this time of the year.”

Adin Hill made 47 saves, an NHL career-high, for the Vegas win.

The Golden Knights moved to 37-19-6.

Marchessault staked the Golden Knights to a 1-0 lead in the first period.

“I just saw the puck was at a good angle and I tried to get out there as quick I could,” Marchessault said. “I know the goalie goes normally where the puck went from. The short side would be open. I just got lucky, I guess.”

New Jersey tied the game, 1-1, on a strike from Jesper Bratt in the first period.

Dawson Mercer scored in the second period to give New Jersey a 2-1 advantage,

“The [defenseman] fumbled it there, and (McNabb) kind of stepped back and tried to get it. I just saw an opportunity,” Mercer said. “There was a thought to try and take it to the net, but it’s never a bad idea to shoot the puck. I was happy to see it go in.”

Marchessault’s second of the game tied the match, 2-2, at 12:50.

Jack Eichel scored in the third period to restore the Vegas lead, 3-2.

“Coming out of the break, he’s looked better and refreshed,” Cassidy said. “He’s separating better. When you lose other players who give you some of that, someone has to give you a little bit more.”

Miles Wood forced extra time, which solved nothing, with a goal at 12:53 of the third to tie it at 3-3.

Akira Schmid made 24 saves in the loss.

“It’s taken a while to get his game to where it’s at,” Ruff said. “Right now, we’re seeing the best of Miles. He’s getting to the net front, and he’s in on two or three scoring chances.”
