On The Strip, Jonathan Marchessault scored in extra time on Friday to send the Golden Knights to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
“We had to find a way to win a hockey game tonight,” Marchessault said. “That’s what we did. We stuck with it. It obviously wasn’t a pretty 60 minutes. Good teams find a way to win, and sometimes you get lucky breaks like that.”
The goal came at 3:21 of the extra session.
Adin Hill made 27 saves in the Knights win.
“I just had to laugh it off, move on and focus on the next play,” Hill said. “It’s unfortunate. Obviously I’m not happy with the play I made. … You got to move on and it’s going to happen when you play the puck a lot. If you get mad about it, think about it, worry about it, you’re going to be focused on other things.”
Vegas improved to 20-8-1, the Golden Knights had lost three straight at home.
“It’s nice to win, first of all, it’s been a while,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “It was that type of game that someone had to [make a play]. Good for ‘Marchy.’ You play the right way. You keep playing. Now you get your chance at what you’re better at, an open space type of shot. I wasn’t sure he was going to pull away at the end there, but he had it in him. Good for him. I said that’s usually what happens in overtime. That’s how we won. Guys make special plays.”
Scott Laughton was the lone striker for the Flyers, his goal tied the game, 1-1, in the middle frame.
The Flyers have lost four of five, and dropped to 9-13-6.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a marker from William Carrier.
“You put pucks to the net, they get loose,” Carrier said. “We’ve seen it. … It’s not always those pretty goals like those 2-on-1s and stuff. A lot of these goals are just scrambles and you got to be around.”
Carter Hart made 32 saves  in the Flyers loss.
Carter Hart made 32 saves  in the Flyers loss.
“Obviously a disappointing finish, but it’s a hard-fought point,” Hart said. “That’s a really good hockey club, so we stuck with them for the whole game.”
