In Las Vegas, Tyler Pitlick and Nick Schmaltz staked the visiting Arizona Coyotes to a 2-0 lead Monday night.
And that was that from the Coyotes.
“We’ve got to get to the net and compete for 60 (minutes),” Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said. “You can’t just play a couple of games. They’ve got to be competitive in certain times when teams like this are making a press.”
The Golden Knights responded with four unanswered goals in a 4-2 win.
Reilly Smith scored two of the Knights’ four goals in the rally.
“Hopefully [we] get off to a better start (going forward). This year is going to be unique,” Smith said. “There’s going to be strategy changes during games. We’ll pick up pointers and make sure to adapt before next game.”
Robin Lehner made 30 saves in the win.
“The goal coming into this camp was to pick up where we left off in the bubble (on the penalty kill),” Vegas head coach Peter DeBoer said. “At the end of the bubble, our penalty kill was a real weapon for us. We’ve got some chemistry in some of the people we’re putting out there.”
Max Pacioretty and Chandler Stephenson added single markers for Vegas who are now 3-0-0.
“We have a veteran team that has confidence in their ability to win games,” Vegas head
coach Peter DeBoer said. “This is a hard league to win in and you’re not going to be at your best every night, and I thought that was the case tonight. We dug in in the third and I thought we played the way we’re capable of playing and found a way to win.”
Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves in the loss.
