Golden Knights ground Jets, 5-2

On The Strip, Jack Eichel scored twice in a four-goal opening period for the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night, en route to a 5-2 win over the visiting Winnipeg Jets.

“We had a good start,” Eichel said. “We came out and played well in the first 20, and we were able to find a way to win from there.”

Adin Hill made 26 saves in the Vegas win.

“We had our legs. I thought we were playing the right way,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “All in all, I liked our energy and (we) approached the game the right way with our start.”

Neal Pionk and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Winnipeg.

“We weren’t really ready to go, obviously,” Jets assistant coach Scott Arniel said. “Really sloppy hockey. We didn’t execute in any area. We were turning pucks over. … Lesson learned. This league is a tough league, and if you don’t come prepared to play, those things will happen.”

William Karlsson and Chandler Stephenson also scored for Vegas in the first period outburst.

“I did not intend to do that. It was a lucky bounce,” Stephenson said. “Usually, you got to get lucky to get something going.”

Jonathan Marchessault added a late empty-net goal for the 5-2 final.

“Every team will have a push,” Cassidy said. “I thought we were fine after 4-0. We weren’t great, but we weren’t poor.”

David Rittich made 27 saves in the Jets loss.
