Giroux breaks goal scoring record

HERSHEY, Pa – It took 22 years but finally, someone moved Brett Hull off his pedestal.

The Hershey Bears’ Alexandre Giroux scored a goal in his 15th straight game and broke Hull’s record 14-game goal scoring streak. Hull set his record in the 1986-87 season, but last night in Hershey, Giroux set the record by scoring a power play goal with 6:27 remaining that tied the game at 2-2. The Bears went on to win the game 3-2 over the Worchester Sharks.

Giroux has scored 22 goals during the 15 game goal scoring streak. His 34 goals in 35 games leads the AHL, which is 8 more goals than the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins Chris Minard’s 26 goals. Giroux’s 52 points is second in the AHL behind teammate Keith Aucoin’s 55.

Hershey has the AHL’s best record of 30-12-0-2 (62 points). Only the Manitoba Moose has at least 60 points. The Bears are on pace to set a franchise record for wins in a season (51) and points (114). The Bears set both marks in 2006-07. The Bears also had a 50 win season in 1987-88.   The Bears first season was in the 1938-39 season.
