NEW YORK (NY) – After defeating the Washington Capitals 24 hours prior, the New York Rangers came home to defeat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. Henrik Lundqvist recorded the win with 27 saves while opposite net minder Louis Domingue made 29 saves.
“We are learning the hard way that every play counts and every mistake that we make will cost us,” Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata said. “It’s costing us games now. It looks good for some part of the game, but not good enough. We are learning that it’s tough to win in this League.”
The Coyotes opened the scoring, getting an early tally just 33 seconds into the game from Vrbata. Just over ten minutes later, Josh Jooris got his first goal as a New York Ranger. Grabner and Fast got the assists.
Outscoring their opponents 7-2 in the second period so far this year, the Rangers would take the lead on a power-play goal from J.T Miller. Vrbata scored his second of the game to tie the game going into the second intermission.
The tie was short lived.
Just over a minute and a half into the third, defenseman Dan Girard got his first goal of the year from his new partner Brady Skjei.
“I’m so happy for him,” Lundqvist said of Girardi. “He’s been working really hard, getting ready for camp, getting ready for the season, and then right away he has to sit out for a few games. That’s never easy, but I just love the way he competes out there.”
The Rangers next game will be the feature of Wednesday night rivalry night in NYC against the Boston Bruins at 8pm.
The Coyotes will head across the river to face Taylor Hall and the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at 7pm.
