It was not for lack of trying by the Florida Panthers Sunday night in their loss to the Ducks in Anaheim.
The problem for the Panthers was that John Gibson made 50 saves for the Ducks to help them defeat the Panthers, 3-2.
“When you come into a game, you might get 10 [saves] or you might get 50,” Gibson said. “You have to be ready to play every night.”
Special teams helped the Ducks with two power play goals from Rickard Rakell and Brandon Montour and a from Josh Manson.
This was a game that was clearly out of the Ducks’ control and they needed Gibson to get the win.
“We were nowhere near where we needed to be tonight and our power play scored two important goals for us,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said.
Vincent Trocheck and Keith Yandle struck for the Panthers’ goals.
“We’re running into hot goalies,” Yandle said. “We are getting opportunities and it comes down to a couple bounces here and there.”
The Ducks have three of their last four and improved to 9-7-3.
“We were fortunate that our power play won the special teams battle. We got a stellar performance from our goaltender, simple as that,” Carlyle said.

Roberto Luongo made 25 saves in taking the loss.
“We executed our game plan well but goals are hard to come by. If we keep out-chancing teams, eventually things will turn for us,” Panthers head coach Bob Boughner said after the loss.
