Gibson, Ducks down Detroit, 3-2, in shootout

In Detroit Monday night, the Anaheim Ducks got a shootout goal, the only goal of the skills competition, to defeat the Red Wings, 3-2.

Troy Terry scored the deciding goal for the win.

John Gibson made 19 saves in the game and stopped all three Detroit shooters in the shootout.

“He’s been our MVP for the three games,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said.

The Ducks have won the first three games of the season despite missing their stars.

Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg struck in regulation for Anaheim.

“We’re 3-0 right now, but the first two games we thought that we could play a little bit better and clean up some areas. … The first two periods (Monday) were a step in the right direction but still not to where we can be,” Silfverberg said after the win.

Detroit’s goals came from Tyler Bertuzzi and Darren Helm.

The Wings held a 2-1 lead in the second period but could not hold on to it.

“We scored and I thought we were probably better through most of [the first] period and then through the second period,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I thought we had big-time chances that their goalie made real big saves.”

Jimmy Howard took the loss on 25 saves.

“Tonight, we were right there, but we’ve got to find a way to flip the switch from being on the wrong end of these games,” Howard said.
