Giants pick up first win of season

Belfast Giants picked up their first win of the season with a three-goal road victory over the Fife Flyers in Kirkcaldy.

Garrett McFadden had the only goal of the opening period – a neat backhand pass from Marcus Eriksson falling perfectly to McFadden in space just 1:53 into the game. Brodie Kay took the only minor of the period, which the Flyers killed off to keep it a one-goal game through 20 minutes.

Ian Scheid levelled the contest at 29:42. A poor pass out from Giants goalie Jackson Whistle put the puck on the stick of Josh Winquist, who found Scheid to tie things up. The scores stayed level for less than a minute, however, as Ryan Smith skated out from behind the net, deked two players to create space, and fired high over Christian Purboo’s glove.

Two minutes later, David Goodwin finished off a 2-on-1 rush from JJ Piccinich’s pass to put the Giants two ahead, just moments after the Flyers had come close to equalising themselves.

Gabe Bast sealed the victory with the final goal of the game, striking with just over seven minutes remaining to earn the Giants a strong bounce-back win after Saturday’s home defeat to Dundee.
