Getzlaf’s OT winner lifts Ducks past Chicago, 3-2

Ryan Getzlaf  had scoring issues all season, but in Chicago Saturday, he notched a power play goal midway through extra time to lift the Anaheim Ducks past the Blackhawks, 3-2.

“At the 15-second mark, they get a breakaway and that guy that got the breakaway is not a bad player,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said of Kane, who leads the NHL with 78 points. “So, when he missed, I said maybe things are looking up for us.”

“That guy” was Patrick Kane who missed the net on a breakaway on the first shift of overtime.

The Ducks’ power play was a result of a quick change in the 3-on-3 format and Kane was caught as the extra man.

“They tried to pull a quick change there,” Anaheim forward David Perron said. “I think if it’s regulation, they probably get away with that. It’s a little bit easier on the refs to look at changes on 3-on-3. There’s less guys to look at. But they didn’t get away with that one. We were able to score there. Nice goal by [Getzlaf].”

Perron and Jakob Silfverberg scored for the Ducks in regulation.

“We’ll take a point tonight,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “I don’t think we deserved a point, but we’ll take it.”

Brent Seabrook scored both Hawks goals, his ninth and 10th on the year.

“We just haven’t quite had the speed and the momentum, that jump we’ve been looking for,” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. “Tonight was a little bit better, but I think top-to-bottom, all four lines need to be better.”

John Gibson started for the Ducks but was replaced by Frederik Andersen after the second period.  A collision in the second left Gibson with an undisclosed upper-body injury.

“We’ve had great hockey games against them,” Getzlaf said. “We expected nothing else tonight. They’re a great team. They have some guys that can score at will, so it was nice to get that win in overtime.”
