Alexandar Georgiev was traded to the Colorado Avalanche by the New York Rangers on Thursday for a third- and fifth-round pick in the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The 26-year-old goalie can be a restricted free agent July 13. He was 15-10-2 with a 2.92 goals-against average, .898 save percentage and two shutouts in 33 games (28 starts) this season and 0-1 in two Stanley Cup Playoff games backing up Igor Shesterkin.
Signed by New York as an undrafted free agent July 19, 2017, Georgiev is 58-48-11 with a 2.94 GAA, .908 save percentage and eight shutouts in 129 games (117 starts).
The first round of the 2022 draft is at Bell Centre on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS). Rounds 2-7 will be Friday (11 a.m. ET; NHLN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS).
The trade gives the Rangers six picks, beginning in the second round (No. 63). They traded a conditional pick to the Winnipeg Jets for forward Andrew Copp on March 21 that became a first-round selection when New York advanced to the Eastern Conference Final. Copp can become an unrestricted free agent on July 13.
The Avalanche do not have a selection until the sixth round. They traded their first-round pick and defenseman Conor Timmins to the Arizona Coyotes for goalie Darcy Kuemper on July 28, 2021, and a second-round pick to the New York Islanders for defenseman Devon Toews on Oct. 12, 2020. Colorado also traded their fourth-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Patrik Nemeth on April 9, 2021.
Kuemper is a pending UFA. The 32-year-old was 37-12-4 with a 2.54 GAA, .921 save percentage and five shutouts in 57 regular-season games and 10-4 with a 2.57 GAA and .902 save percentage in 16 playoff games to help the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001.
Goalie Pavel Francouz signed a two-year contract with the Avalanche on March 12.
