INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Nick Mattson scored his first pro goal and added an assist to pace the Indy Fuel to a 3-2 win over the Evansville IceMen on Saturday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
Mattson’s goal came on the power play with 3:30 remaining in the first period as he one-timed a shot from the right circle past goaltender Christoffer Bengstberg (25 saves) to open the scoring.
After Vincent Dunn tied it in the second period for Evansville, the teams would trade goals in the third starting at 3:32 on a Rhett Bly power play goal to make it 2-1 Fuel. Dylan Clarke forced a turnover behind the IceMen net, fed the puck to Mattson in the right wing corner and Bly put home the centering pass from point-blank range.
Nathan Moon tied the game on a breakaway after coming out of the penalty box at 5:53, and on the play Fuel goaltender Cederick Desjardins appeared to be in some discomfort after Moon pushed his left pad in over the goal line along with the puck.
Desjardins (47:33, 27 saves, W) stayed in the game only for another 1:29 as Peter Schneider scored on a great individual effort for the Fuel, deking past the IceMen defense and to the backhand to beat Bengstberg for the game-winning goal. During the stoppage following the goal Desjardins was replaced by Shane Owen, who stopped all eight shots faced in relief.
The Fuel will now head to Cincinnati for the first half of a home-and-home with the Cyclones starting Friday night at 7:35 pm. The Morellis Cleaners Indy Fuel pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to puck drop on CBS Sports 1430.
