Fuel power past Nailers 3-2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indy Fuel scored a pair of power play goals 1:54 apart en route to a 3-2 win over the Wheeling Nailers on Sunday afternoon at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

The pivotal stretch straddled the second and third periods after Wheeling’s John McCarron was called for a four-minute double-minor for high sticking at 19:02 of the middle frame.  Just before time ran out on the Fuel, captain Zach Miskovic recorded his fifth goal of the season at 19:54 to put the team up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.  On the second half of that same infraction, Mike Colantone netted his third goal of the season for the game-winner just 1:48 into the third period for a 3-1 advantage.

Both teams were potent on the power play in the game, with Indy (18-20-2-0) and Wheeling (15-17-2-2) each scoring twice with the man advantage.

Wheeling’s second power play goal came with just 5:27 left in regulation and drew the game to 3-2.  When Anders Franzon was sent off for interference at 18:14 the Nailers had one more chance at the power play but Mac Carruth (26 saves) made two sterling stops and then the Fuel got a third from defenseman Nick Petrecki during a wild sequence with under a minute to go to preserve the win.

Peter Schneider opened the scoring for the Fuel in the first period when he took a Nailers turnover the length of the ice and cut to his right in front of Wheeling goalie Franky Palazzese (35 saves), tucking the puck just under the crossbar at 8:59.

The Fuel will now host the Quad City Mallards this Friday and Saturday night at 7:35 pm, followed by a Sunday matinee visit from the Fort Wayne Komets at 3:05 pm.  The Morellis Cleaners Pre-game Show starts 15 minutes before every puck drop on CBS Sports 1430.
