Fucale shuts out Detroit in NHL debut

In Detroit, the Washington Capitals’ Zach Fucale made 21 saves in a 2-0 shutout of the Red Wings on Thursday night.

It was Fucale debut in the NHL.

“This is a really great moment,” Fucale said. “I don’t think you can even dream about something this good. It has been a long road, but now I have to focus on the next game.”

The game came down to 10 early seconds in the first period.

Dmitry Orlov and Lars Eller scored 10 seconds apart in the opening frame for all of the scoring in the match.

“We were very committed to playing hard in front of Zach, but he was really good,” Eller said. “He took care of a lot of his own rebounds.”

Washington improved to 7-2-4.

“We were a little slow out of the gate, but Zach was sharp and kept the crowd from getting into the game,” Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette. “This is awesome to see him do this.”

Detroit dropped to 7-6-2.

“The first goal is a shot that we didn’t block,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “But we win the (ensuing) face-off, and the puck is in our net eight seconds later. That’s nonsensical. We lost a puck battle at the red line and gave up a 2-on-1.”

Thomas Greiss made 27 saves in the Wings loss.

“[Greiss] kept us in that game all night, because we didn’t play the way we need to play,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We didn’t create chances, we didn’t get to the center of the ice, and our power-play wasn’t good enough.”
