Free agent signings slow over holiday Unsigned players on the downside of productivity remain free agents waiting for short-term deals

The start to the week, with the 4th of July holiday mixed in, led to a quiet free agency with just a few signings.

The biggest deal was the Washington Capitals resigning of left winger Andre Burakovsky.

The deal was reported at $6 million over two years.

With the Dallas Stars signing Alexander Radulov for five years and more than $31 million, that did not leave room for the likes of Ales Hemsky who moved to the Montreal Canadiens who need scoring of any type this coming season.

Hemsky signed for one year and $1 million.

The New York Rangers made a bargain deal for the services of centerman David Desharnais who iced for the Edmonton Oilers late last season.  He has eight years in the NHL and has been a good face-off man but his scoring is limited.  He signed on July 4 for a year and $1 million.

The 40-somethings, Jarome Iginla and Jaromir Jagr, remain unsigned.

Thomas Vanek is also unsigned and perhaps teams are waiting for the discount to kick in on him and several other players in their mid-30s like Daniel Winnik, P.A. Parenteau, Johnny Oduya, and Andrei Markov.
